Statue of Jacob Cats (1577-1660)in Brouwershaven, Zeeland, The Netherlands. Cats was attorney, diplomat, poet, and writer of life lessons. No Dutch poet has ever equalled Jacob Cats in popularity: of his Houwelyck alone some 50,000 copies were sold between 1625 and 1655. He was a prolific versifier, whose didactic yet homely works won him much respect and popularity (he became known, among his countrymen, as ’Father Cats’).
